Catalan | The Price of Sugar, the Cost of Love
"Tenes molt bona pinta, Liisa".
Chapter 12: A Gloomy Future
Liisa sat on the old sofa in her small living room, looking at the flickering television. Her children were in their rooms, trying to do their homework with the little light from the weak bulb. She took a deep breath and held her cup of cheap tea, which she now had to drink.
Her mobile phone vibrated, and she saw a message from one of her new sugar daddies, Kalle: "Hi, love! How about a date tonight? I want some fun. You in?"
Liisa sighed, feeling sad. She knew she had to accept Kalle's offer. It was the only way to make enough money for her children.
"Alright, Kalle. I'll see you at the usual place in an hour," she replied, trying to sound happy.
As she got ready, she thought about her rich life with Antti before. Her life now was very different. She was a single mum, living in a grey block of flats in Espoo, and depending on less rich and less good-looking sugar daddies.
She put on her coat, took a deep breath, and went out into the cold night.
At the small, dark bar, Kalle said hello with a wet kiss on her cheek. "There's my girl!" he said. "You look great, Liisa."
She smiled and said, "Thanks, Kalle. Nice to see you too."
Kalle ordered some cheap drinks and tried to talk to Liisa. She answered without much interest, thinking about her children at home and the bills she needed to pay.
"Liisa," Kalle started, "I thought we could go to my place later. I got some new furniture to show you."
Liisa tried to smile. "That sounds nice, Kalle."
The night went on, and Liisa felt empty. She remembered her happy life before and now saw only a sad future, full of difficult dates and problems.
With a heavy heart, Liisa lifted her glass and tried to smile. "Cheers, Kalle," she said, as their glasses touched. The sound was a sad reminder of the life she had chosen.
